Photosharing in US

SAN JOSE, Calif. - When it comes to your digital photos, sharing has never been so competitive.

Scores of start-ups, backed by millions in venture capital funding, are straining to catch the eyes of digital shutterbugs. Meanwhile, Internet giants Google and Yahoo are sprucing up their photo-sharing offerings.

On Wednesday, Google launched Web Albums, an updated version of its Picasa photo-sharing software the company acquired in 2004. For now, Web Albums is offered on an invitation-only basis while the search engine giant works out any potential kinks.

Yahoo recently announced it was giving one of its two photo-sharing sites, Yahoo Photos, a facelift, too.

Americans are snapping digital photos with their camera phones and high-end Canons and Nikons like never before - they are expected to take nearly 22 billion digital snapshots this year, compared with about 9 billion film images, according to PMA Marketing Research.

"The whole thing isn't so they can sell a $25 upgrade," said Chris Winfield, president of 10e20, a search engine marketing firm. "It's so you are there. You are going to do searches and look at their ads and click on their ads."

Google's trial Picasa Web Albums offers users a clean and quick way to scan and share photos. People can write captions and comment on the photos of their friends.

The goal was to "make it as easy as possible for the average user to use," said Adrian Graham, Google's Picasa product manager. "You don't have to navigate through complicated folder structures."

Yahoo, which says it stores about 2 billion photo images on Yahoo Photos, has incorporated some of the features from its other photo-sharing site, Flickr, which it acquired last year.

Yahoo Photos, launched in 2000, is a more private photo-sharing experience preferred by, say, parents who want limited access to images of their children, said Will Aldrich, product management of Yahoo Photos.

Yahoo Photos was the second-hottest photo site in April, attracting 7.7 million U.S. visitors, a 21 percent jump from April 2005, according to the most recent statistics from Nielsen/NetRatings. Photobucket.com was the top of the heap, with 7.8 million visitors. Flickr was fifth, drawing more than 4.8 million visitors. It was the fastest-growing photo-sharing site among the top five, soaring 346 percent year over year.

The Internet is crowded with photo-sharing services, observed Phil Leigh, president of research firm Inside Digital Media. As Google and Yahoo flex their muscles in the photo-sharing business, it will become more and more difficult for smaller sites such as FilmLoop, Shutterfly and Snapfish to grab the attention of the photo-sharing masses.

Microsoft's Gates says to reduce role in 2008

REDMOND, Washington (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. founder Bill Gates said on Thursday that over the next two years he will ease out of a day-to-day role at the company he built into the world's biggest software maker.

His decision to step down immediately as chief software architect and to relinquish all managerial roles in July 2008 comes at a time when Microsoft, whose Windows operating system runs an estimated 90 percent of the world's personal computers, is struggling to find new sources of growth.

Gates, 50, passed the technical mantle to Ray Ozzie, who joined Microsoft last year and is at the heart of Microsoft's push to maintain its dominance by transforming software into services that generate an ongoing stream of revenue instead of just a one-time sale.

By July 2008, Gates said, he will be working full-time for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation -- which he has funded with his software billions to promote health and education projects around the world -- but will still be working "part-time at Microsoft."

The world's richest man, whose wealth was estimated at $50 billion in March by Forbes magazine, will remain as Microsoft's chairman and an advisor on key development projects past the 2008 transition.

"Obviously, this decision was a very hard one for me to make," Gates told a news conference. "The change we're seeing today is not a retirement, it's a reordering of my priorities."

Few expected the news would affect operations at the Redmond, Washington-based company, which employs more than 60,000 people worldwide. Gates began taking less of a role when he handed the chief executive reins to long-time deputy Steve Ballmer in January 2000.

"Bill Gates may step away from day-to-day responsibility but he will never, ever step away from Microsoft," said Anthony Sabino, professor of business at St. John's University.

Shares in Microsoft rose 0.9 percent to close at $22.07 on the Nasdaq, and fell 9 cents in extended trading on the Inet electronic brokerage after Gates' announcement.

Microsoft stock, whose stratospheric rise during the 1990s inspired a generation of tech entrepreneurs, has fallen 13 percent over the past year as investors question its ability to find new growth markets.

Microsoft has been trying to respond to threats from companies such as Internet search leader Google Inc. and Apple Computer Inc., which built a lucrative business around its iPod digital music player.

The company has also stumbled in releasing the next version of Windows, delaying its shipping date several times and cutting out some highly anticipated features.

Its MSN network of online services has struggled to gain traction against Google and Yahoo Inc., and it has spent billions of dollars trying to unseat Sony Corp. in the video-game console market.

"I bet to a certain degree he (Gates) might be getting tired of beating his head against the wall and trying to find other profitable revenue streams besides their Windows operating systems," said Shannon Reid, manager of Evergreen Strategic Growth Fund, which owns Microsoft shares.

At the same news conference as Gates, Ballmer, 50, spoke with his usual confidence and enthusiasm, saying Microsoft aimed to add another 1 billion customers in the next decade.

"We're really also announcing the transition we're making as a company to reach the next level of success and meet the needs of a world hungry for new technology," Ballmer said.

"We will continue his vision of thinking big and executing even bigger."

Gates said Ozzie -- who created Lotus Notes, which was one of the first popular corporate e-mail programs and is now sold by IBM -- will replace him as chief software architect. Craig Mundie, another chief technical officer, will take the new title of chief research and strategy officer.

Ozzie, 50, joined Microsoft last year as one of three chief technical officers after it bought his Groove Networks start-up focusing on collaborative software.

"Certainly, he's got the experience and respect within the industry, but he's not going to be able to take on all Bill Gates' roles because as the founder, Bill Gates had a kind of moral authority that no one else can really take on," said Matt Rosoff, an analyst with Directions on Microsoft, an independent research firm.

Online Dating Safety Tips: 8 Essential Steps to Successful Internet Dating.

Compared to the "real world" dating, some people view online dating as less safe. Nothing can be further from the truth!

The opinion probably persists due to the fact that in real life we usually meet people who were introduced to us by someone we know and trust, or in a transparent situation, such as at work or school/university.

But because no one introduces you to your online dates, this does not mean online dating is unsafe - quite the opposite!

In fact, meeting someone online is much safer than meeting someone at your local bar: you cannot get hurt by sitting in front of your computer.

All you need to do to make online dating work for you is to exercise some caution. You would not let a stranger into your home and your private life, without getting to know them first, would you? Don't do it online, either.

Here are 8 essential steps that will help you make your online dating experience secure and rewarding.

1. Anonymous Dating

It's a great advantage that contacts entered through an online dating site are anonymous, so you can maintain your privacy, but there are some drawbacks, too - some people might not be what they say they are. While there are not many people like this, they do exist. Most dating sites don't screen their members. You should exercise caution and common sense in your communication with other members.

2. Overseas Contacts

Be especially careful in communication with members from other countries than your own. Some people might try to use your limited knowledge of those countries to take advantage of you. Please be advised to never wire any finance on request of overseas members, whether to help in an emergency or travel arrangements. If you intend to meet overseas members, remember to consult your immigration authorities first, and choose an appropriate option.

3. Getting to know each other

Never give your personally identifiable information to anyone you do not know well. Use the website's anonymous messaging system for the first contacts. Ask many questions and listen to their answers:

' Do they answer the questions you ask?

' Does their story seem credible?

' Don't they avoid certain questions, such as their marital situation, who they live with etc?

' Aren't they too sweet and seem to agree with everything you say?

Those are the red flags that should make you cautious.

4. Sending photos

It is the old truth that the picture is worth a thousand words. Ask the people you are writing to for their photos and send them yours. If they never ask for your photos, this is strange because everyone wants to know how the person they are dating looks like! Don't send old photos or photos where you don't look like your real self: once you meet in real life, the picture should match the person behind it, or they will feel disappointed. But it does not mean you cannot send pictures that present you in the best way: send a photo of yourself with a happy smile; it's always a winner! When your dates look at your photos, they try to figure out what type of person you are: if you look grumpy, they will think you are grumpy. If you look happy and easygoing, this, too, is what they will think of you. If you do not have recent photos, ask a friend with a digital camera to take some pictures of you. Choose the best shots only and erase the ones you don't like. Ask your correspondents how recent the photos are they sent you to avoid a possible disappointment.

5. Giving away your email address

When you feel comfortable with your communication, you can give them your personal email address. Register a separate email account for this purpose, and only use it for your personal correspondence. If something goes wrong in your relationships, you can always close down this account and open a new one. Keep asking questions and discuss different things. If all your communication seems to be going one way, then they probably have their own agenda.

6. Giving away your phone number

When you feel comfortable with the person you have been emailing to, give them your contact phone number, preferably your mobile. Do not give away your work number (or your work email address), ever! After all, you do not want someone to email your boss or phone your office, in case the relationship does not work.

7. Meeting face to face

After you have emailed one another, and talked on the phone a few times, it's time to meet face to face. If people are happy to communicate with you online but don't want to use the phone or meet you in person, this might be due to the fact that they have misrepresented themselves. Real, honest people that seek love and partnership don't want never-ending virtual courtship; they want the real thing.

Only meet in a public place for the first date, and preferably, set up a time limit for the date. For example, you can say you only have half an hour before a business appointment; this will help if the date does not go as you hoped for. A 'coffee date' is a safe bet. If you are a woman, never go to unknown places; instead, suggest your own variant of a place for the meeting, where service personnel knows you, at least visually. If a man is decent, he will honor your request.

Tell someone that you have a date with a person you have met online; it can be your mother or a sibling, a person, who will not judge you. If you don't feel like telling anyone, make a note about the person you are meeting and how you got to know him/her, and place it where this information can be found.

Have your own transport to get home from the place of the meeting; better still, have a friend to fetch you. Never allow your date to take you home, even if something is wrong with your car. Phone a friend or call a taxi instead. Make sure you are not followed when leaving the place of the meeting - especially if no one has shown up.

When you meet your date, don't jump to conclusions straight away. You might unintentionally create an image in your mind, which is different from the real person; this is not their fault; give them a chance. It's quite common to feel awkward at first; simply relax and try not to concentrate on the outcome: doesn't matter if they like you or not, you are still enjoying the date. If you need to concentrate on something, concentrate on having fun! If this helps, remember that they are also nervous and they can only hope you will like them.

Smile! Nothing helps to break the ice better than friendliness and openness. Talk about something that you have shared in your last emails, so that they feel you are indeed the same person they have been talking to for a while.

But still, use caution. Have your mobile phone with you. Don't leave your drink unattended. If you have to leave the table, order a fresh drink on your return.

Pay for yourself. If you decided to never meet this person again, do not tell them about it on the date. Tell about it in an email. If the person asks how the date was, tell them: 'Great! I will email you tonight'. It's not easy to face rejection, so make it as polite and nice, as you can.

8. Advancing your relationship

If you enjoyed the first date, keep seeing one another for a while before moving further. Don't progress too fast; you must really get to know the person before deciding to have a relationship of any kind. If the person shares with you a land-line phone number, presents a business card etc, those are good signs: they trust you and want to continue the relationship. It's now up to you to decide, whether to accept their invitation or not.

Most of all - HAVE FUN, because this is what it's all about. Some people will not be what you are looking for, and you cannot be right for everyone. But if you persist, you will be doing better and better. It takes loads of rubble to find gold. Remember that each encounter is a learning experience that can make you more successful.

You may be yet another person to find your soul mate through an online dating site - just like thousands of other people before you!

Executive Dads Say Being a Father Makes Them Better Professionals

NEW YORK, June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Fatherhood, usually associated with home life, turns out to be a valued asset in the workplace for executives, according to a national survey conducted by TheLadders.com, the world's leading online service for $100,000+ jobs. The company's annual "Fatherhood In the Workplace" survey found that 79% of executive dads say being a father actually makes them a better professional.

TheLadders.com survey reveals that busy executives who rely on technology to communicate in the workplace also use it to stay connected to their families. Eighty-seven percent of "Digital Dads" use technology, such as cell phones, PDAs and email to contact their children throughout the business day. According to the survey, the top ranked method that Digital Dads use to communicate with their kids is the cell phone (77%), followed by email (56%), text messaging (30%), and sending instant messages (12%).

"Professional dads recognize that technology saves them time. Any 'time found' is a blessing when you're balancing work and family life. This is especially true when it comes to job searching," said Marc Cenedella, President & CEO, TheLadders.com. "Executives are looking for a way to streamline the process, and TheLadders.com does just that. By pre-screening thousands of $100k+ job postings and listing only the best senior-level positions on our site, dads can quickly target the right jobs and spend less time on work, and more time on family."

Today's executive dads are better able to balance successful careers and family life than a generation ago. Sixty-six percent of today's fathers reported that they spend more time with their children than their own fathers spent with them. However, workplace pressures still impact quality time with loved ones, with 72% of fathers reporting that they often have to sacrifice family time for work-related issues. Some fathers have even reported mixing work and family time, with 31% of executives stating they have taken their children along on business trips.

Even when children are out of sight they are rarely out of mind. Only 14% of respondents had no reminders of their children in the office, while over 75% of dads kept some type of memento of their children at work. Over 68% of dads have their children's photos on their desks, while 46% have artwork their children created in the office. Forty percent of executive dads saved a photo of their family onto the computer as wallpaper or screen savers and 24% kept a photo of their children on their cell phone or PDA.

TheLadders.com survey took place between June 1 and June 5, 2006 and the key findings have a statistical margin or effort of plus or minus 3%.

New book captures images from past

A search for old pictures of his 1920s residence led Murfreesboro businessman Bill Jakes into collecting postcards and pictures of his hometown.

Ultimately, that collection resulted in publication of the postcard book, "Murfreesboro," released this month by Arcadia Publishing.

The 127 page soft-bound book features postcards and a few pictures. Some, like the historic Rutherford County Courthouse, Stones River Battlefield and the York VA Medical Center are familiar to residents of and visitors to Rutherford County. But other scenes of churches, schools, rivers bridges, roads, hotels or motels are long gone or forgotten.

The 35-year-old Jakes and his wife, Julie Fischer, a local real estate agent and sculptor, purchased a home on North Maney Avenue on Valentine's Day 2004.

"I delved into the history of the old house," said Jakes.

The home was built in the 1920s. James Bell and his family formerly lived there. Bell was one of the sons of W.R. Bell, who once owned Bell Jewelers on the Public Square.

"I was attempting to find a picture of my house," Jakes said. "I decided to check online and that search lead me to a postcard of Murfreesboro. I had never considered the thought of old postcards being that available. The more I kept searching, the more I found."

He said the most common Murfreesboro postcards are of the James K. Polk Hotel and the Rutherford County Courthouse.

"You can get a Polk Hotel card for $5 to $10," said Jakes. "Some of the more rare ones are of houses involved in the Civil War."

One of the postcards in Jakes' book is the Mitchell log cabin, which sat along the Stones River, near McFadden's Ford. It was used as a field hospital after the skirmishes there, according to Jakes.

"I don't own (that) card, but it brought $100 the last two times I've seen it cross eBay," Jakes said.

An appreciation for the history of Murfreesboro and his interest in photography led Jakes to look for more cards on the Internet.

"Ever so often, I would find another one that I really want to have," Jakes said.

By August of 2005, Jakes had amassed a large enough collection of post cards in a picture album that he began considering the idea of putting them in a book.

"I thought if we could reproduce this in an affordable book it would be great," he said.

In "Murfreesboro," Jakes adds up-to-date information about buildings, churches or homes in captions, explaining, among other things, what stands there today if the scene has changed.

"Most of my information came from the research room at the Linebaugh Library, but I also have a number of old books about Murfreesboro that I have collected myself," he said.

He also researched information on the Internet, from the Rutherford County Historical Society and from MTSU's Gore Research Center and the Center for Historic Preservation.

One postcard caption in the book explains that the Confederate Memorial was once placed looking down East Main Street, but moved to its current location in 1914. Another caption under a Rutherford County Courthouse photo explains that the third floor to the courthouse was added and the cupola replaced in 1907 and 1908.

Even though most of the emphasis of the book is on the 200 postcard pictures, a few of the notes written on the back of the cards have been published. One note writer told her sister in Marionville, Mo., that Murfreesboro was having a lot of wind and rain in March of 1909.

One section of the book reprints photos of the tornado of 1913 that ravaged portions of downtown Murfreesboro.

Other postcards in the book are simply personal pictures.

"Kodak came out with photo-sensitive paper that were blank postcards (in the early 1900s)," said Jakes.

When he began putting the book together, Jakes also borrowed cards from other local collectors, including retired local educator Jerry Gaither, Eddie Miller of Miller and Loughry Insurance and Jim Laughlin, manager at Digital Planet on Lytle Street.

Laughlin, another student of local history, is excited about the release of the new book.

"It is a good remembrance of the past," he said. "How many people 35 years old take the time to do this? The postcards are one thing but the writing is very accurate."

Susan Daniel, editor of publications for the Rutherford County Historical Society, is looking forward to seeing the new book.

"The postcards will show pictures of places and buildings in Rutherford County that in some cases don't exist anymore," she said. "At least it will show them at the time the postcard came out."

Copies of the book are available at area merchants and Oaklands Historic House Museum.

Jakes will be speaking, and signing copies of the book at Oaklands, 900 N. Maney Ave. in Murfreesboro on June 27, beginning at 7 p.m. He will also sell the book at the Uncle Dave Macon Days festival at Cannonsburgh Village July 7-9. He will also speak at the Rutherford County Historical Society meeting July 17 at 7 p.m. at the Carriage Lane Reception House , 337 E. Burton St. in Murfreesboro. Books will be on sale there as well for $19.99 each.

"This is a historic document. Hopefully, it will be laying around on library shelves for another 100 years," said Jakes. "My major motivation was to make some of these pictures more accessible to everybody."

Photozig Albums software transfers photos and movie clips from digital cameras, organizes them in the computer, creates slideshows with photos, movies, and music, generates personalized screensavers, emails photos to friends, and includes free online photo albums.

"You can easily find that special picture with quick search, tag photos, categorize albums, view digital photos in different ways, exchange full resolution images through the internet, drag/drop images from web browser to your computer, and much more," said Bruno Kajiyama, CEO of Photozig. "Imagine creating rich screensavers with your own pictures, which can be easily configured, providing much more personalized images on your desktop than free animated screensavers, or standard slide show programs."

The Photozig Albums family consists of three products: "Express" (basic digital photo organizer); "DeLuxe" (enhanced image views, sorting, and filtering); and "Premium" (extra video support).

Photozig Albums Express product is offered free of charge for a limited time, including built-in free photo editing software, free slideshow software, and photo organizer software. Photozig Albums DeLuxe and Premium products will be sold through RegNow, a Digital River, Inc. company (NASDAQ:DRIV).

Photozig Albums is based in part upon a research project, funded by the National Institute of Disability Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), under grant H133S020030, particularly R&D findings related to enhancing usability and interface methods to facilitate assimilation for a broad range of users, and enabling easy organization of personal digital memories in a desktop computer.

Users can download photo software at www.photozig.com and unleash the possibilities of the best digital camera technology.
